Wondering what to bring on a Kuala Lumpur food tour? Less than you’d think. Comfortable shoes, a small bag, water, your phone and a good appetite cover most of it. Travel light, because for a few hours you’ll be holding a skewer in one hand and your phone in the other.
Here’s what we’d pack ourselves, plus a few things worth sorting out before you leave the hotel. If you haven’t picked a route yet, start with our guide on how to choose a food tour in Kuala Lumpur.
What to wear on a Kuala Lumpur food tour
KL is hot and humid for most of the year, so go for light, breathable clothes you’re happy to walk in and sit down in. Hawker stalls often have low plastic stools, and stiff jeans or a tight skirt make them harder work than they need to be.
Shoes matter most. Wear a pair you’ve already broken in, with soles that grip. Tiled walkways get slippery after a shower, and a food walk is a bad day to try out new sandals.
If you’d like to step inside a mosque or temple before or after your tour, check its dress code and visiting hours separately, since that’s a different visit from the food walk.
What to bring on a food tour (keep it small)
- A water bottle. It’s warm out, and it’s worth checking whether drinks are part of your tour.
- A compact umbrella or a light rain jacket. Afternoon and evening downpours are common here, so pick something you can stuff away quickly when the food arrives.
- A packet of tissues and some hand sanitiser. Plenty of hawker stalls don’t hand out napkins, which is why most Malaysians keep tissues in their bag.
- Your phone, charged, with the meeting point pin, your booking confirmation and our contact number saved before you head out.
- A small power bank if you’ll be using maps and taking photos all day.
- Some cash in small notes for extra drinks or anything you want to buy for yourself. Check what your tour includes first so you know what’s already covered.
A cross-body bag or a small backpack keeps your hands free for drinks and photos. Leave shopping and luggage at your hotel if you can. Squeezing between stalls on a busy evening is much easier without them.
Find the meeting point before you set off
Use the exact pin from your booking confirmation when you navigate. Jalan Alor and Petaling Street can both be reached from several directions, and heading for the nearest landmark can still leave you on the wrong side of the street.
Our Masjid Jamek walk meets at Masjid Jamek LRT station, which makes it easy to reach by train. For Jalan Alor and Petaling Street, we send the exact meeting point after you book. Give yourself a few spare minutes to find your guide, and if you’re running late, message us on the number in your booking straight away, because the group may have moved on.
Tell us about food requirements early
Let us know about dietary needs before you book, and be specific. Preferring mild food, eating vegetarian and having a nut allergy are very different things, and each needs its own arrangements.
Wait for us to confirm what the route can do for you rather than assuming every tasting can be swapped. Then remind your guide when you meet, so there’s no confusion at the stall.
Come hungry, but pace yourself
Skip the big lunch before an afternoon tour, or the big dinner before an evening one. Depending on the route, our group walks include nine to a dozen or more tastings, so you’ll want the room.
At the first stop, ask your guide how the food is spread across the walk. Then pace yourself so you’re not already full when the later dishes come round. If you’d like a smaller portion, just say so. And if you want to know what you’re looking at, our guide to what to eat in KL covers the dishes you’ll see most often.
Sun, rain and the forecast
Check the weather before you leave and keep your rain gear where you can reach it. On a daytime walk, bring a hat and sunscreen; the midday sun in KL is strong.
Our Jalan Alor food tour starts at 6pm, 7pm or 8pm, after the worst of the heat, though evenings are also when a lot of rain tends to fall. Our KL night market food guide has more on eating out after dark.
If the weather looks bad, read the weather and cancellation terms in your booking and get in touch with us for instructions rather than guessing whether the walk is on.
